Because of the range and number of hotels, hostels, guesthouses, and B&B’s in Thailand, the prices are very competitive, especially in the low season (outside of Western winters).  This is of course great news for the thrifty traveler.The buyers’ market means that one can stay in 3-Star and below hotels for very little money, yet still enjoy a quality of accommodation, and especially service, that you’d typically pay much more for elsewhere.

Furthermore, these less jazzy places are often located in more colorful, authentic, neighborhoods – just what you’re looking for: clean, basic accommodation in an area with local markets, street stalls selling food, clothing, and souvenirs, and many friendly, down-to-earth locals who will often invite you to join them for a bite or a drink.
