Thailand’s history is rich and varied, making it a fascinating place to explore. Much of its erstwhile heritage can still be seen in several cities, most within easy reach of Bangkok. English-speaking guides can be hired from all top-end hotels, while private drivers can ensure you spend just as much time as you want at each point of interest.

Among the must-see sites is the Grand Palace in Bangkok, home of the Emerald Buddha, Thailand’s most revered image. Next door is Wat Pho, where a 46-metre long reclining Buddha barely fits in its hall.

Phra Atchana is the highlight of a visit to the Sukhothai Historical Park in the north, while slightly nearer Bangkok, the former capital of Ayuthaya has its own historic area and more than a dozen temples. Wat Phra Si Sanphet and Wat Mahatha are among the best known, the latter largely due to a Buddha image that has become entwined in a tree’s roots. Chiang Mai is also a fine place to visit to see the temples and old moat that still surrounds the old town.
