Khon Kaen, located in the heart of Isan, Thailand’s rural northeastern region, is truly a cultural destination, lacking the tourist attractions and frills of Thailand’s largest cities. For those wishing to delve into Thai culture and experience some Isan customs, food, and music, it’s a great place to start. One still has all the conveniences of a large city, yet is surrounded by all things Thai.
With a population around 150,000, it is far from a sleepy village, and is in fact home to the largest university complex in Isan – Khon Kaen University – with its hip and trendy students, and all that comes with this in terms of shops, restaurants, Net cafés, and vibrant night spots.Being largely a student population, prices are nice as well.
Many great products can be purchased in Khon Kaen, especially the high quality silk that it is famous for.Furthermore, Khon Kaen is the perfect gateway city: to Isan cities such as Udon Thani, Nakhon Phanom, and Nong Khai; and from there on to Laos, Cambodia, or Vietnam.
