Wine Bars

Wine has never really taken off in Thailand thanks to high taxes and a feeling that the grain is better than the grape. Nevertheless, wine-lovers are catered for in many bars, such as the superb L’Opera, on Bangkok’s Sukhumvit 39, which boasts more than 400 bottles, or nearby there’s the Wine Loft, often has live jazz to listen to while you sample a bottle.

For a view with your glass, head up to Breeze, at the State Tower in Bangkok, where more than 3,000 varieties are available. If you have a glass too many, it’s probably best avoiding the skybridge that’s suspended here. Bacco Restaurant and Wine Bar, also in the capital, feels like a tavern and has a lively atmosphere on most nights.

Down in Phuket, the Boathouse has more than 800 labels of French and other international wines, while up in Chiang Mai the WOW (whisky and wine) bar sits inside the Shangri La Hotel and has a phenomenal range of drinks.
