Situated in the Chan Sen Subdistrict, Chan Sen Ancient City is a remarkable archaeological site that dates back to the Dvaravati period. Its archaeological significance provides insights into the early interactions between this part of Southeast Asia (previously called Suvarnabhumi) and India. The layout of Chan Sen Ancient City is quite distinctive. It is characterized by square-shaped molehills and is further enclosed by a moat that spans 20 metres in width. Although the area has now transformed into a marsh, the remains of the ancient city are still visible within its dimensions, stretching 800 metres in length and 700 metres in width. The area near the molehills within the city is elevated compared to the land outside the moat, leading locals to refer to it as 'Khok Chan Sen'.
A wide array of ancient artefacts has been unearthed from Chan Sen Ancient City. These include items made from clay; such as, amulets, dolls, lanterns, buddha image’s lotus base, Dharmachakra or Wheel of Dhamma, as well as, artefacts crafted from stones, tin, and bronze; such as, earrings made of lead or tin, and spear made of bronze. These invaluable historical relics are meticulously preserved and displayed at the Chan Sen Museum, conveniently located within Wat Chan Sen.
